Meet Richard (fondly known as "Little Richard")

He is the second son and middle child of Richard and Mary Capp of Missouri, USA. Richard was born in 1985. Up until 1999 it was thought he had Partial Trisomy 18. However in 1999 further genetic testing actually showed that he instead had Partial Trisomy 16 with an 18p deletion

Little Richard's dad is also Richard, Richard Edward to be exact. He is an avid home repairer and construction worker. In 1994 Richard senior broke his neck, it was the same vertebrae as Christopher Reeve however there was no spinal cord damage. He is now legally blind, but you would never guess from his activity level and he still manages to get around without too much difficulty, thanks to Rehab Services for the Blind.

Mary is Mom to this wonderful family she is a Registered Nurse with a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing. Mary tends to specialise in geriatric nursing and works in nursing homes and home health. Up until 1985 when Richard was born she had never heard of Trisomy 18 or Trisomy 16.

Together they are the proud parents of three wonderful children. Michael, Richard and Hannah.

Michael is the eldest and is 15 years old. He is a high school student and has just started to notice that girls are built differently to boys!! Michael also suffers from dyslexia however his last report card consisted of "A"s and "B's except for Spanish. His only modified class is English and even there he is almost up to grade level. He does a lot better when using the computer than when writing with a pen. The biggest news with Michael at present is that he is now learning to drive!!!!

Richard (Little Richard) is 13 years old. Richard was originally diagnosed with Partial Trisomy 18 p (18p+) and his parents were told that he would most probably not live more than 2 or 3 months. However in 1998 his parents attended the SOFT Conference and spoke with Dr. Carey who felt that Richard was more like a child with Partial Trisomy 16. Once back home Richard and Mary followed through with further genetic testing which confirmed that Richard did indeed have Partial Trisomy 16 with a partial deletion of the short arm of chromosome 18 (the extra 16 material is where the missing 18 material should be). Richard is very small for his age but has brought a great deal of joy to his family.

Hannah is the youngest member of the Capp family at 7 years old. She is a precious first grader who loves to help Mommy out but like most first graders usually ends up making Mommy work twice as hard. She is a very friendly and loving child who is very protective of her "bubbie" Richard.
